Leave
Non-Teaching Staff
Annual Leave
Entitlement to annual leave is set out in individual contracts of employment and may be subject to protection under arrangements for the transfer of staff to EA in April 2015 from the five legacy Education and Library Boards (ELB’s) and their Staff Commission.
The general information provided here applies to NJC staff employed from 1 April 2015 and staff employed prior to this date should also refer to their individual contract of employment.
Statutory Entitlement
All employees have a statutory entitlement to minimum paid holidays and contractual annual leave entitlement for EA non-teaching staff plus entitlement to public and extra-statutory holidays, exceeds the minimum legal entitlement of 5.6 weeks.
Employees working less than a 5 day/36 hour week and/or fewer than 52 weeks per annum will have an entitlement to leave that is pro rata to the hours, days and weeks worked.
The leave year extends from 1 April in one year to 31 March the following year and new employees are entitled to leave proportionate to the completed months of service during their first year of entry. Annual leave entitlement is to be taken at a time that is mutually agreed between members of staff and their Line Manager.
Public Holidays and Extra-Statutory Holidays
There are normally 12 public and extra-statutory holidays in any leave year. Employees that work less than a 5 day/36 hour week, and/or fewer than 52 weeks per annum, will have an entitlement to leave that is pro rata to the hours, days and weeks that they work. Where more public and extra-statutory holidays occur on working days than can be covered by pro rata entitlement, the remaining days will need to be covered by annual leave or unpaid leave.

Self-Service - Equal Opportunities Monitoring
It is important to note that, since the implementation of the Fair Employment (School Teachers) Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, Equality Monitoring information should be completed by all staff – including teachers and non-teaching staff members.
Please take 5 minutes to complete, or update, their Equality Monitoring information via Oracle Self Service at their earliest convenience.
Why is it important to provide Equality Monitoring Information?
As an organisation that values diversity, EA is committed to ensuring that we fulfil our duties under Section 75 and Schedule 9 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (the Act) and under the Fair Employment and Treatment (Northern Ireland) Order 1998. As a large public sector organisation, we will continue to drive a culture that promotes inclusion and respects difference. ‘Equality’ is one of the Education Authority’s key values, and as a values led organisation, respect for diversity and promoting inclusion is central to all of the work that we do.
The collection and monitoring of equal opportunities information helps us to analyse the demographic of our workforce across schools and EA services in relation to the protected categories such as disability, age, gender, and ethnicity, as well as community background. This analysis will help us highlight any potential inequalities, investigate the underlying causes of those inequalities, and seek to redress any unfairness or disadvantage.
Staff are not legally obliged to provide the information and where staff do not wish to declare their status under any of the protected categories on the Equality Monitoring Information, it is advisable that they still complete the form with the “Prefer Not to Say” option that is available.
You can find more information on how to access the Equality Monitoring Form.
Joint Declaration of Protection
EA values all its employees and works to create an inclusive environment where individual differences are respected and valued - and this ethos is set out in our Joint Declaration of Protection.

GLEAM - EA's LGBTQ+ & Friends Staff Network
GLEAM is a staff network designed to promote a better understanding of LGBTQ+ Inclusion and make LGBT experiences more visible in the organisation through a programme of activities and the co-ordination of staff attendance at related events. GLEAM also works with other employers to share best practice and provides valuable networking opportunities for members including informal mentoring and coaching.

For more information see our Menopause Workplace Policy.
Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse Workplace Policy
The EA is committed to promoting a workplace culture with zero tolerance for abuse that recognises that the responsibility for domestic and sexual violence and abuse lies with the perpetrator. Our ‘zero tolerance’ position on domestic and sexual violence and abuse is committed to ensuring that any employee who is the victim of domestic and sexual violence and abuse has the right to raise the issue with their employer in the knowledge that they will receive appropriate support and assistance.
